How to Apply

Deadlines are October 17 and March 15. (Proposals related to timely professional development opportunities or events can be reviewed in between cycles if needed.)

LITS strongly recommends consulting with us prior to submitting: we're happy to talk through ideas and goals, help you develop a reasonable budget or timeline, identify potential hardware and software resources or needs, and connect you with potential campus collaborators.

Additional Information

Digital 91传媒 Grants may be used for research and curricular development projects that have a significant digital technology component, related professional development opportunities, and event sponsorship.

In addition to funding, awards often involve considerable LITS staff collaboration. For example, we might help applicants research hardware, software, hosting or compute solutions; develop workflows and methodologies; recruit, hire and train student assistants; advise on instructional design and supporting student project work; connect applicants with colleagues doing similar work, or develop post-project archival, transfer or maintenance plans.

  • All 91传媒 faculty, staff and graduate students are welcome to apply.
  • Graduate students must provide the name of the faculty advisor supporting the project.
  • Undergraduate students aren't eligible for this grant, but we'd still love to work with you!
  • Project funding is for up to one year.
  • Short-term extensions will be considered with a request in writing to the primary LITS contact for the award.
  • For longer-term projects, applicants may apply for additional support once the initial term is complete.

General:

  • All expenses must be allowable per College expense policies.
  • Funded activities must be directly related to the use of or critical engagement with digital technologies in teaching, learning or research.
  • If you are uncertain about how much to budget for project-related activities, we are happy to help!  or email Alice McGrath or Jennifer Spohrer.

Fundable expenses include:

  • Hiring undergraduate or graduate students as digital project assistants (follow Student Employment Office policies and rates)
  • Software, courseware, or hardware for pilot projects.
  • Outside contractor services
  • Related professional development expenses
  • Sponsorship or co-sponsorship campus events (workshops, guest speakers, etc.) related to digital technology and teaching, learning, or research
  • Experiential educational trips or courses

Digital 91传媒 grants cannot be used for:

  • Stipends (including summer or sabbatical salary) for the proposer.
  • Course buyouts or releases.
  • Faculty research travel.
  • On-going funding of software and hardware beyond a pilot phase.

Please see the Provost's faculty support pages or consult with us about other funding sources that might cover these types of expenses.

  • Applications are due on October 15 and March 15 each year.
  • Applicants are typically notified of decisions within one month and awarded funds can be used immediately.

LITS' Teaching, Learning and Research Leadership committee with following members reviews proposals:

  • Christopher Barth, Vice President and Chief Information Officer and Constance A. Jones Director of Libraries
  • Jennifer Spohrer, Director of Educational and Scholarly Technology
  • Janelle Rebel, Seymour Adelman Director of Special Collection
  • Camilla MacKay, Director of Library Research, Instruction, and Patron Services and Scholarly Communications Librarian
  • Alice McGrath, Senior Digital Scholarship Specialist
  • David Consiglio, Director of Assessment, Learning Spaces and Special Projects

We also consult with the Provost's Office and the Director of Sponsored Research to ensure that awards supporting faculty research and teaching align with the College's faculty support policies and programs.

Awardees are required to:

  1. Collaborate with Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) staff.
  2. Submit a short final report or collaborate with LITS on a story for the College website at the conclusion of the project.
  3. Allow LITS to publish the project title and names of project team members, except in extenuating circumstances.
  4. Share experiences with the 91传媒 community in appropriate venues, such as Works in Progress lunches or Colloquium for Visual Culture, Digital Scholarship or departmental lecture series.
  5. Be open to helping cultivate digital pedagogy and scholarship communities of practice at 91传媒 by mentoring or collaborating with other faculty, staff, and graduate students.
