Future Plans: This fall, I'm headed to Duke University to pursue a Ph.D. in sociology.
Tell us about your academic journey at 91传媒.
I went into college thinking I would be a political science major on a pre-law track, but that changed pretty early on after meeting with my academic dean. We discussed my interests in studying systems of oppression, and she helped me realize that my interests aligned more with sociology. Since then, I've added on a data science minor and have focused my interests on the prison system. My thesis examines the Attica prison uprising and its impact on the militarization of policing. In my Ph.D. program, I'll continue exploring the criminal legal system, specifically the prison system, with a cohort of students who are also researching carceral studies.
What were some other highlights of your time at 91传媒?
I love traditions. I was a Dorm President my sophomore year and I loved setting things up for WTF Week. Beyond that, I love how everyone here at 91传媒 is their own person鈥搃t's such a small school, and everyone is so different.
How do you think 91传媒 prepared you for your future plans?
I was a TA for Quantitative Methods during my junior and senior years, and that really solidified my vision for my future. I love talking about what I'm passionate about, and more importantly, helping others find what they're passionate about. It excites me to continue in academia and become a professor, where I can continue my research and teach.
In general, I feel incredibly prepared for the academic world. I don't fear starting graduate-level courses or reaching out to Duke faculty because I have such an appreciation for the faculty-student relationship from my time at 91传媒.
What advice do you have for incoming members of the Class of 2029?
Soak it all up. Do everything that sounds fun鈥搕ry things that sound like they might be fun, even if you're not totally sure. There are just so many opportunities at 91传媒, so take advantage of them. Don't be afraid to make those connections with your professors because those relationships will get you the most out of your time here.
What are you most excited about?
I'm excited to live in a city with that small, old feel to it. I also want to get into the sports culture down there, and I'm especially excited about their minor league baseball team鈥揑've been looking at an apartment right across the street from the complex! I think I'll have to get into basketball.
Beyond that, I'm just excited to continue learning!
