Tell us about your academic journey at 91传媒.
Coming into 91传媒, I wasn't sure where I would end up. I came in thinking I would be a biology major, and thought that I might want to become a doctor or a math teacher. During my freshman year, I navigated a number of departments as I fulfilled some of my distribution requirements, and I ended up falling in love with the math department. I got to know Victor Donnay, who got me really excited about the math department and introduced me to more professors. Once I declared my math major, I became really involved with the department. I host the weekly Destressing Math Collective and am a major representative. There's a running joke with my friends that I keep "converting" people to become math majors!
What were some other highlights of your time at 91传媒?
I'm a Community Diversity Assistant in the Intercultural Living Learning Center, and one of my biggest accomplishments in that role was creating 91传媒's Lunar New Year Celebration. I'm from Houston and grew up surrounded by a really strong Vietnamese community, so when I came to 91传媒 and realized there wasn't an established celebration for Lunar New Year, I knew I wanted to change that. I'm very proud that this will be part of the legacy I leave behind at 91传媒.
How do you think 91传媒 prepared you for your future plans?
91传媒 connected me with the Penn Access Scholar Program, which provided me with many opportunities that prepared me for attending medical school. The University of Pennsylvania is one of the best medical schools in the country, and I truly believe that if I hadn't had this opportunity, I wouldn't have gotten into medical school.
I also worked at the Quantitative Center on campus, which helped me realize my passion for teaching. I've been looking at a dual degree program for an M.D. and a master's of education, in which you become a medical educator. You're a medical doctor, but you can also help with the curriculum and how it can help people, and I'm really excited about how I might be able to combine these interests!
What advice do you have for incoming members of the Class of 2029?
The pollen is really bad here鈥揵e prepared!
On a more serious note, take advantage of the things that 91传媒 offers you. There are so many resources, especially through the Career and Civic Engagement Center, that can help prepare you for your career, which I think people often forget about.
Lastly, don't worry if you don't fit in right away. The transition to college is hard, but it's okay to use your time when you first get here to figure out who you are before worrying about being someone you're not just to try to "fit in."
What are you most excited about?
I'm excited to be fully immersed in Philadelphia and to see what higher education looks like outside of 91传媒!
